The Smithereens to headline Maplewoodstock 2011

Dressed in leather, brandishing heavy guitars, and an unabashed fetish for British Invasion pop, New Jersey’s own The Smithereens was an anomaly in the American college rock scene of the late ’80s.

For the past quarter century, this iconic rock band has toured non-stop, recording and releasing Gold and Platinum albums that spawned countless Top 40 radio hits.

The Smithereens will close out Maplewoodstock 2011 on Sunday night, July 10.

Raul Malo to close day one of Maplewoodstock 2011

Malo’s latest album (Sinners & Saints) was self-produced in his home studio and is brimming with deeply personal beliefs and passions. It is the most intimate, honest and complex album he has made in an already distinguished career. You will hear in it a lifetime’s journey, from the singer and songwriter’s youth in the Cuban neighborhoods of Miami through his years with hit country band the Mavericks to his place today as one of the most intriguing and talented artists in the Americana and World Music scenes.

Malo will close out Saturday’s schedule (July 9) for Maplewoodstock 2011.

Released at the height of the new wave explosion, his 1978 debut Alive On Arrival offered a first look at his colorful mix of spare acoustic introspection and scrappy rock ‘n’ roll and became one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. Forbert expanding his audience substantially with 1979’s commercial breakthrough album Jackrabbit Slim and his era defining hit single, “Romeo’s Tune,” which reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1980. Volunteers Needed

Tom Kerns is the President of HK Community Fund, a community based charitable organization.

Tom says: First let me say thanks to everyone who is performing this weekend. This event has evolved into one of the (if not "the") event of the year in Maplewood and I'm thrilled to be part of it. As some of you know, I have committed to providing the event with an army of teenage volunteers to help with a variety of tasks throughout the 2 days (four days if you include Friday night setup and Monday morning clean up). I have been fortunate to have been able to get commitments from almost 30 local teenagers to volunteer their time. However I still need more. So if any of you have teenager children, or know of any teenagers, who would want to volunteer and receive community service credit (not to mention a free bright green HK Community Fund Volunteer t-shirt) please have them get in touch with me at hkcf@comcast.net.

Thanks, Tom, for taking some leadership in this. Please take Tom up on his offer to put in some volunteer time to make this weekend a success for everyone.

Band meeting

Maplewoodstock held a band meeting last night to go over logistics for the Maplewoodstock weekend.

A lot of hard work (from setting up the stage and sound, to setting up tents and lights, to picking up garbage and breaking everything down on Sunday night) goes into Maplewoodstock. For the most part, we want the crowds that come to simply enjoy the great music and vibes and pick up after themselves.

But there are volunteer opportunities for people who want to pitch in and help in a more direct way. The bands participating in the event are -- of course -- expected to help, as well as keep on schedule and keep a relaxed vibe.

If your band didn't have a representative at last night's meeting, reach out to Maplewoodstock soon to get the details. If you are not involved in the event, but want to volunteer in some way, reach out to us at maplewoodstock@gmail.com

t-shirts are $15 each

Yes, folks. Maplewoodstock is back and better than ever in 2009. We can officially announce the dates of Sat and Sun, July 11 and 12, for the Sixth Annual Maplewoodstock -- a celebration of the music and arts community.

T-shirts? We're designing 'em.

Lawn signs? We're printing 'em.

Band lineup? We're deciding.

Art and food vendors? We'll be getting you info soon on how to sign up.

So ... cancel your summer vacation plans and block out that weekend. Someday ... someway ... this Maplewoodstock will be the Best One Ever.

Well, I've been busy starting to set up the Flickr photosharing site for Maplewoodstock. You can find it at www.flickr.com/maplewoodstock

I really would like that site to be *the* place for Maplewoodstock photos for years past, present, and future.

I just think there are so many advantages to utilizing a mature tool like Flickr rather than (a) trying to do it "by hand" or (b) trying to build such a tool.

I'm trying to set up SETS in Flickr for each band and for each year. Further, I'm tagging each photo with tags like (obviously) "maplewoodstock" and "2008" and "[bandname]", but also with ISO-format date (like "2008-07-13" and "crowd".

Utilizing SETS and COLLECTIONS properly, along with TAGS, will make it much easier for Maplewoodstock sites (like the one here on blogger, as well at the dot com site) to use the Flickr badge builder and API to pull specific photos and photosets over to those other sites.

It would also allow Maplewoodstock bands to do the same thing on thier sites (whereever they may be).

As of today, a modest start with 27 photos. I've got to upgrade the account and solicit some more photos.

Maplewoodstock 2008 - Day Two

Wow! Another incredible day of music and fun. MVP for the weekend: the weather.

Awesome sets. From Sunday opener No Heroes through to the straight-ahead rock of 3rd Gear ... from the Hoboken-sound of The Cucumbers to Emotional Rex. And from the scruffy blues-folk of FELT to the back-in-the-day sounds of Aztec Two Step.

Big shout-outs to all those in front and behind the scenes who made this magic day happen.

And big claps to all the friends and neighbors from the Two Towns (and beyond) who came out and supported this festival and gave back enthusiastically to all the musicians.

Day One

Wow! What a fantastic day for Day One of Maplewoodstock 2008. The weather was perfect and we were treated to some awesome music.

Some highlights included Starfish's rockin' kid-friendly set at 4 pm, the lovely ladies of Madison's vocal harmonies at 4:45, the debut of the epic, sprawling sounds of Thursday Habit at 6:15, the tight, soaring sounds of Nu Band at 8:30, and Montclair's own The Reticents at 9:15.

I can't wait to see what Day Two has to offer.
